The glory of a captain: the journey and triumph of Demollari from Tirana to Bucharest!

The prologue
In the pantheon of Albanian football, there are countless names that left a mark, and who managed to build an authority as pure and indisputable as S. Demollari. This natural-born leader holds a unique record: he is the only player to have led all of our youth national team levels as captain.

From the modest schoolyards of Tirana to the roaring Balkan stages of Bucharest, the career of this Merited Master of Sport turned into the symbol of a brilliant talent that flourished in the last two decades of the past century. And yet, due to his high level, the sporting public always expected something even more magnificent from him under the colors of “Dinamo” or at the helm of the National Team.

1 – The blue-and-white genesis of a Dinamovite love and the explosion of a young master
The foundations of this history were laid in the environment of the “Alqi Kondi” eight-year school, a true football nursery that discovered gems such as Vasillaq Zëri, Muhamet Dibra, Arben Minga, Artur Lekbello, Arjan Bimo, and Astrit Ramadani.

However, even though Demollari grew up near the fields of the blue-and-whites, witnessing daily the magic of names like Përnaska, Ballgjini, Sejdini, Gega, Targaj, and Hazbiu, his heart beat for another color. His childhood love carried the emblem of “Dinamo”.

The first steps with the pre-youth and later the youth ranks of the blue club culminated in a championship title, where his game of finesse made the difference.

His talent could not be resisted; very soon, the staff of the first team began integrating him into test matches.

Although short-statured, his tactical maturity was immediately noticeable, and at the age of 16, he became a permanent part of the senior team.

His first official match in the Republic Cup against “24 Maji” of Përmet bears the mark of an extraordinary act of encouragement: when the team won a penalty, the veteran Shyqyri Ballgjini took the ball and, instead of leaving it to stars like Zëri or Përnaska, handed it to Demollari, saying: “You shoot it”.

That goal is worth something only for the club archives, but for the young boy, it was a driving force to conquer the world of football. A few months later, at the age of 17, Demollari debuted as a starter in the championship during the away match in Lezhë, intelligently scoring the only goal of the Dinamovite triumph. His name no longer simply promised the future—he was the present.

2 – The conquest of Europe and the international echo of “Shpresa” U21
Demollari’s international career quickly took off. As the leader of the youth national team, he led Albania to the finals of the tournament in Finland where, thanks to his fantastic performance, he was named the best midfielder of that tournament, in a competition that featured Marco van Basten himself along with the Dutch stars.

When he turned 19, his brilliance shifted to the “Shpresa” U-21 national team. Under his leadership, the team demolished both Austria and Turkey by the same scoreline, 3–0. The masterpiece of that generation came in the double-headers against Bert Vogts’ West Germany.

Two historic 1–1 draws (in Shkodër and away) shook the international press, so much so that the prestigious magazine “France Football” ranked the Albanian “Shpresa” eighth in the world.

This success paved the way for a long era (1983–1996) where Demollari served as the engine of the senior national team, leading the legendary 2–0 victory over Belgium and the great 2–2 draw in Poland.

However, his “Dinamo”, in the late 80s, was going through the most difficult moments in the history of Albanian football, when facing “Naftëtari” to survive in the first category. Demollari and his teammates seemed to have lost that brilliance despite the names and the weight of the blue shirt. Even with the “National Team” of the early 90s, Demollari showed signs of a champion in decline with a fluctuating performance, which was visible in the match against Sweden in Tirana, where there was excessive ball retention, misplaced passes, and clear scoring opportunities that he did not know how to finalize.

3 – The boom in Bucharest: the big contract that wrote history
The opening of borders after the fall of the system in the early ’90s was accompanied by the great desire of Albanian players to prove themselves abroad.

While his National Team colleagues hastily chose a transfer to “Aris” Thessaloniki for 11,000 dollars a season (a massive sum for the time), Demollari waited for his moment.

Managers were preparing a move to “Panathinaikos”, but before news could arrive from Athens, an incredible offer arrived from Romania.
“Dinamo” Bucharest deposited a full 250,000 dollars for the services of the Albanian star, a figure that caused an extraordinary buzz in the region.

Demollari immediately turned into the idol of the Romanian fanbase. In his first year and a half with him on the pitch, the team did not suffer a single defeat (only victories and four draws), becoming champions of the country and Demollari the club’s top scorer with 18 goals.

For two consecutive seasons, he dictated the law as the most adored player in the Romanian championship.

The epilogue
When he hung up his boots, Demollari took the helm of the Albanian national team at the young age of 37. However, the immense pressure, the short time available to build a playing identity, and perhaps the obstacles or egos of the sporting environment did not allow him to repeat his success from the green pitch on the bench, leaving it as a dream cut short.

Yet his contribution to the country’s football could not stop there. The sports directors entrusted him with a long-term and vital project for the future: the creation and leadership of the first U-15 national team in the history of Albania in the international arena.

An important mission, placed precisely in the safe hands of this Merited Master, who knows well how true champions are discovered and educated.
