The Great Overthrow of Tradition: How “Vllaznia” and “Skënderbeu” Shattered the Hierarchy of Albanian Football in the 1964–1965 Republic Cup!

The Prologue
The 14th edition of the Republic Cup in 1964-1965 will long remain written in the annals of Albanian football as the season of fallen myths and the triumph of provincial willpower.
This competition, which began its journey in the hot August of 1964 and concluded in May of 1965, delivered one of the most dramatic and unpredictable scenarios of the post-war era.
It was a time when the absolute dominance of the capital’s two giants—the “Partizani” and “Dinamo” duopoly—was shaken to its core, paving the way for two historic, traditional teams to dictate the law in an extraordinary knockout journey.
The previous 13 editions had been shared almost entirely between “Partizani” and “Dinamo”, with the sole exception of 1963 when “17 Nëntori” emerged as the winner after a penalty shootout against “Besa”.
1 – The Collapse of the Contenders: The Shocking Fall of “Partizani” and “Dinamo”
Even before the first kick of the ball, all eyes were on “Partizani” as the reigning titleholders and owners of six trophies in this competition.
However, January of 1965 would reserve one of the greatest tactical earthquakes in the history of this tournament.
In the Second Round, under the brutal format of a single elimination match, the reigning champions of “Partizani” were stunned at home by a merciless “Flamurtari”.
Following a tense 1–1 draw in regular time, the Russian roulette of the penalty shootout penalized the People’s Army squad, shockingly eliminating them ahead of schedule.
Equally grim and silent was the fate of the other great contender, “Dinamo”. The Public Order representative team, which historically considered the Cup its comfort zone, failed to even enter the brackets of the main stages, being eliminated early.
When the rapid elimination of “17 Nëntori” (defeated 4–2 by “Labinoti”) is added to this drama, the capital was completely stripped of its authority, leaving the stage wide open for an entirely new story.
2 – The Road to Glory: “Vllaznia” and “Skënderbeu” on an Epic March
In this pure climate of sporting anarchy, “Vllaznia” Shkodër and “Skënderbeu” Korçë began building their journey toward myth. For the Shkodra side, the Second Round was an absolute show of force away from home, where they demolished “Korabi” with a clean 0–3 record.
But the real drama for the red-and-blues arrived in the Quarterfinals against a steel-like “Luftëtari”. The match concluded in a 1–1 draw, forcing the boys from Shkodra to pass through the drama of penalties to keep their dream alive. In the Semifinals, “Vllaznia” faced the giant-killers, “Flamurtari”, in a fierce battle that ended with a hard-fought 2–1 victory, securing their ticket to the grand final.
On the other hand, “Skënderbeu” proved that their success was bound to composure in critical moments. The Korça side began their march with a highly difficult challenge in the Second Round against “Tomori”. After the 90 minutes ended in a 1–1 draw, “Skënderbeu” won thanks to precision from the penalty spot.
In the Quarterfinals, they narrowly defeated “Punëtori” (Albpetrol) 2–1, before executing their masterpiece in the Semifinals, where they eliminated “Besa” Kavajë with a clean, tactical 1–0 victory, electrifying the Korça fanbase.
3 – The Grand Finale of May:
The Crowning of the Red-and-Blues
In May of 1965, the stadium hosted the final act between two teams that had overturned every prediction: “Vllaznia” against “Skënderbeu”.
The final match was a true reflection of the entire championship—a intense tactical war where neither team wished to make a mistake. The open gameplay and attacks of the Shkodra side clashed with the organized Korça defense, but in the end, it was the clinical precision of “Vllaznia” that made the difference.
With a minimal but golden 1–0 victory, “Vllaznia” hoisted its first major Republic Cup trophy, restoring glory to the city of Shkodra and concluding one of the most extraordinary editions of Albanian football.
