Agim Tafili, the rider of the wind who made Albania talk about cycling

Prologue
In the history of sport, a champion does not always remain only in the record books. Some become champions, while others, beyond medals and titles, become part of the memory of a city.

And there are those who, at a time when Albania’s sporting world was a small island facing the rest of the world, manage to create a name so great that it seems as though the road on which they compete is no longer that of their own country, but a much wider stage.

Agim Tafili was one of them.

From Bërdica, to the roads of Shkodër, from a bicycle he once used to ride to school, he would climb all the way to the summit of Albanian cycling.

Six-time champion of Albania.

Four consecutive titles, then a break and two more titles.
A fierce rivalry with Agim Huqi. Races won by seconds.
Cycling Tours covered over countless hours.
The National Team.
The World Championships.
Greece.
And a return to the Tour of Albania at the age of 36.

But statistics, however important, do not tell the whole story.
Because Agim Tafili was not only a champion on a bicycle.
He was one of those athletes who gave Shkodër another reason to be proud.

From Bërdica toward the horizon!
Agim Tafili was born on May 19, 1960, in Bërdica, Shkodër.
The bicycle entered his life early.

Not as a great dream of championships, podiums or sporting glory. At first, it was simply part of everyday life. Tafili rode his bicycle to school and, while others were involved in other sports, he had begun to create his own bond with the two wheels.

At the age of 14, the turning point came.
His physical education teacher, Bahri Asllani, saw something more in him and brought him to Ruzhdi Muriqi, the coach of “Vllaznia’s” youth team.

Five months.
Only five months of training.
And the boy from Bërdica became a youth champion.

Then came 1976 and 1977, when Tafili repeated his success in the youth category. It was only the beginning. When the bicycle began to speak

At the age of 17, he took part in the Tour of Albania with the senior riders. And he did not go simply to gain experience.

He finished third.

A year later, in 1978, he was among the favorites for the title. But sport, as always, also had its cruel side: at the decisive moment, both of his tires punctured.

A lost title.
But perhaps also a warning of what was to come.
Because in 1979, Agim Tafili would no longer be the challenger.
He would be the champion.

And a series would begin that would place his name in the history of Albanian cycling.
Four years, four times at the top
In 1979, Tafili was racing for “Partizani”.
It was the time of military service and, like many athletes of that period, his journey passed through the red club.
But the bicycle did not care about the shirt.
It demanded the strongest legs, the biggest lungs and the mind that knew how to endure.

Tafili had them all.

In the 35th Tour of Albania, that anniversary edition, he completed the route in 23 hours, 9 minutes and 20 seconds, leaving his great rival Agim Huqi behind by only 10 seconds. In the same year, at the 35th Anniversary Spartakiad of Liberation, Tafili won the 40-kilometer race, leaving Huqi only nine seconds behind.

A rivalry had been born that would keep Albanian cycling on edge for years.

Champion in 1979.
Champion in 1980.
Champion in 1981 with “Vllaznia”.
Champion again in 1982 with “Vllaznia”.

Four years. Four titles.
In an Albania where every meter of asphalt could become a race track, Tafili was turning cycling into a personal story.
One bicycle, two rivals and a Shkodër that followed every pedal stroke

Two names.
Two styles.
One rivalry.

At that time, the fans were not waiting only for the result. They were waiting for the duel.

In 1979, Tafili won the Tour of Albania by only ten seconds over Huqi. In the 40-kilometer Spartakiad race, the difference was only nine seconds.
These were not simply numbers.

They were seconds separating glory from defeat.
Seconds that could change the entire history of a race.
And Shkodër lived these battles with the passion usually reserved for football.
1983: a pause, not the end
In 1983 came a break from sport.
But Tafili had not settled his account with cycling.

In 1984, he returned.
And he returned to where he had left off. At the top.
Again in 1985.
Two more titles.

Thus the six were completed:
1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1984, 1985.

Four consecutive titles.
One year away.
Two more titles.
Six-time champion of Albania.
And this was not simply a statistical series.
It was an era.

When Albania took to the roads of the world
But Tafili did not limit his racing to within Albania’s borders.

In his 2007 interview, he recalled his participation in the Tour of Turkey and a result that remained in his memory: Albania finished second, only four seconds behind the winner.

Then came another stage.
The World Championship.
Tafili took part in the 1979 World Championship in the Netherlands, according to his own testimony, while in 1994 he was once again on the world stage, this time in Catania, Italy.

His 1994 participation is also documented in the international ProCyclingStats database: Tafili appears in the individual time trial at the World Championship, finishing 54th in the race standings.
For a cyclist who had been formed on the roads of a country that was small in sporting terms, this was another door opened to the world.

Patras: when the Albanian champion kept pedaling
At the end of 1991, Tafili settled in Patras, Greece.
The time might have come to walk away from sport.
But he chose to continue.

He joined POP – Podhilatikos Omilos Patras, where he raced alongside Greek cyclists, among them Kanellopullos, according to his own account.
It was another chapter.
Another country.
Another language.
But the same bicycle.
And the same man upon it.

36 years old and back in the Tour of Albania
In 1996, Agim Tafili returned to Albania.
Not for a visit.
For a race.
At the age of 36, he took part once again in the Tour of Albania.
And he finished second.
This is one of those parts of his story that needs very little embellishment.
A six-time champion.
36 years old.
Returning from Greece.
And standing on the podium again.

Some people leave sport behind. Others carry sport with them.
Agim Tafili was one of the latter.
When the race ended, the memory remained

In 1997, he ended his active career in Greece and later remained connected with cycling, also working as a consultant and with young riders.

On January 15, 2012, Agim Tafili passed away at the age of 51, after a serious illness.

A year later, Bërdica honored his memory by giving the name “Agim Tafili” to the nine-year school of Upper Bërdica.

It was a beautiful way to return his name to the place where everything had begun.

Because the story of Agim Tafili did not begin in a velodrome.
It did not begin at a World Championship.
It did not begin in Greece.
It began in Bërdica.
With a bicycle.
With a 14-year-old boy.
With a teacher who saw something in him.
And with a coach who set him on the road of cycling.
Then came the titles.
The rivalries.
The long roads.
The seconds.
The World Championships.
Emigration.
The return.
And finally, the memory.

Epilogue!
There are names that time fades.
There are also names that time tests.
Agim Tafili is one of those names that should remain.

Not only because he won the Tour of Albania six times. The tables and archives tell us that.

But because behind every title there was a story.
Behind every race there was a road.
Behind every second there was a battle.

And behind every victory was a boy from Bërdica who had learned not to fear the distance.

In the Albania of those years, when our athletes competed far from the great possibilities and conditions of the world, Tafili was a figure who gave cycling a face, a rhythm and a sense of pride.

We may remember him as an “Albanian Fausto Coppi”, not as an official title, but as a metaphor for the greatness he achieved in the eyes of the Albanian public.

And perhaps this is the most beautiful way to remember him:
Agim Tafili did not have the world ahead of him.
He had a road.

And along that road, with two wheels, legs and heart, he went farther than a 14-year-old boy from Bërdica could ever have imagined.
